How to sew a diaper bag?

Requirements

image_sew_diaper_bagFor sewing a diaper bag you will require 2 pieces of fabric, one for the outer surface of the diaper bag and the other for its lining. Their measurement will be the same, that is, 25 inches or 63.5 cm in terms of length whereas their width will be 18 inches or 46 cm. For the purpose of interlining you will need a piece of the same measurement quilters fleece. Then there should be some fabric measuring 23 inches by 18 inches or 58.5cm by 46 cm for attaching pockets to the diaper bag. Also you will require 2 more pieces of a material measuring about 43.5 inches or 111cm in terms of length and with a width of 3.5 inches or 9cm for the handles.

Handle

To make the handles of the diaper bag begin by folding the material long ways and keeping together the wrong sides and you must press that fold. Then refold in such a way that the edges of that material meet at the central part of the edge that is ironed. Refold. Then again fold in a way to have the ends wedged in the center. You should stitch together on both sides of diaper bag handles. Next, attach these handles onto the fabric meant for the outside measuring 5 inches or 13 cm from sides of diaper bag or the 2 long edges. From the ends that are narrower or diaper bag top portion, they must measure 9 inches or 23 cm. Leave a space measuring 2 inches amid upper handle stitching and top part of the diaper bag.

Pockets

Take the material for pockets and fold both its long sides in the center with the right sides of the fabric together. You should stitch along the 2 raw ends. After turning press the material’s right side. In the middle part of the fabric meant for the lining you must place this pocket piece with the right side upwards and then pin the pocket on all sides. Then mark pocket’s middle part by means of a line that is right across that material corresponding with top of the diaper bag. After measuring 2 inches along both sides of the line in the middle you must sew from pocket top from 1 side and for the other side the stitching should be along that line of 2 inches. Then turn and stitch in the same way the other pocket section.

Layering

Put the fleece first and on top it place lining with its right side upwards and then place the material meant for the surface of the diaper bag with the wrong side facing you. Pin these three sheets together keeping the handles aside from the area meant for sewing. Leaving some space for turning the bag inside out, sew the bag all around.

Then after turning out the bag you must press it and match the tops as well as the fronts of the right side. Sew down the two sides keeping a minute hole in the bag’s seam. Now sew the top side of the diaper bag pressing the line of stitching open flat. Then push the bag’s base smooth and correspond the side lines of stitching with the middle of the bag’s base. Marking a line about half inch away from the pocket material, sew on the 2 sides of this line. You should cut some base of the bottom in order to fix the pocket athwart. After having inserted the grid within the pocket you must turn the diaper bad inside out.

Velcro

Lastly attach Velcro to the inside of the diaper bag’s top by stitching it or by simply utilizing Fabric Fusion Velcro whose attachment can be done by just ironing it.
